This compilation embodies a rich tapestry of musical impressions, drawn from the vibrant cultural milieu of the New World. It melds the contemporary and the traditional in jazz, capturing the essence of American metropolitan life with its complex layers of mood and atmosphere.

Reviews

“The first track serves as a kind of preview of the nuances and directions in which the album unfolds. In “American Mood” and “Old & New”, we find the answer to why Grochot was so eager to collaborate with saxophonist Rob Denty, whose haunting solo greatly shapes the atmosphere.

The fourth track on the album, “13/Incredibly Strange Story”, is a gradually developing, dynamic piece built around a captivating theme. The dialogue between trumpet and saxophone is especially intriguing, leading into an uncompromising drum solo, followed by a moment of calm in which master of articulation Wania reintroduces the main theme.

The gentleness with which the piano opens the track’s finale introduces the next piece on the album, the refined and melancholic “Portrait of Dorota”, where the double bass accompaniment draws particular attention, giving the performance a poetic resonance.”

“The facts are simple: Polish drummer Tomek Grochot and American trumpeter Eddie Henderson met in America and recorded a session, documented on this beautifully produced and superbly recorded album.”
“”In America” is an exceptionally melodic album, filled with beautiful themes (most of them written by the leader—only one of the seven compositions is by Krzysztof Pabian). As a composer and musician, Tomek Grochot is deeply attuned to the classic side of jazz, which he transforms in his own distinctive way. You can hear echoes of the genre’s great masters throughout the album—but let’s be honest, on which contemporary mainstream jazz album are they not present? The tracks resonate with both bebop-inspired energy and more subdued, ballad-like influences.”

“The music is typical mainstream Jazz, very much in the American Jazz tradition, based on the excellent compositions, which are used as vehicles for solo spots by the quintet members. The character of the compositions reflects the Polish facet of this music, being full of melancholy and lyricism, which is best expressed by the exceptional playing by Wania. But of course all the performances are highly professional and overall the album represents mainstream Jazz at its best.”
